The Importance of Having Good Air Ventilation Inside the House, Plus the Way

Every house and building must have a good ventilation system. If not, dirty air will only continue to rotate in the room so that it will have a negative impact on the breathing of each occupant. Indeed, what is a good ventilation system like?

Types of ventilation that are commonly applied in homes or buildings

Ventilation system is an air exchange system from the outside in and vice versa which aims to control the air quality in the room. The existence of an air exchange system can remove pollutants that settle in the room so as to provide healthy air for us to breathe.

Ventilation is a system that is mandatory in every building. Although it looks clean shiny, each house will produce dirty air, which is either from a mixture with fragments of dust dust or from vehicle fumes outside the room.

Generally there are 3 types of ventilation systems that are most commonly used by housing or office buildings.

1. Natural

The natural ventilation system that is required in every building is a window that can open the lid and open air holes that are usually in each of the top doors. These openings are useful for pushing out the air in the room and entering clean air from outside.

In addition to air outlet windows and gaps, certain buildings and housing may also have a chimney on the roof to allow for maximum air exchange.

The shape and how much natural ventilation in your home will depend on your needs, regional climate, and the design of your building.

2. Machine

If using natural ventilation is not enough, you can install the machine to allow air exchange at home. Engine ventilation is usually a fan, air conditioning, or exhaust fan.

These machines aim to accelerate air circulation in the room by sucking large amounts of air in space at the same time to be discharged outside. At the same time, this machine will draw fresh air from outside and supply it to the room.

3. Mixed models or hybrid models

Sometimes some rooms, such as kitchens or bathrooms, need to use different types of ventilation so that the air exchange is more maximal.

Usually in addition to paired windows, kitchens and bathrooms will also be paired with exhaust fans. This tool serves to suck and throw air in the room, and replace it with a new one.

The process of rapid air exchange allows the air in the room to not be too long or damp. Exhaust fan must be installed in a room with one side facing the outside of the building through a wall or roof.

How do you know that ventilation in your home is good?

To find out whether the residence or office building where you work has good ventilation, all the questions below must be answered with "yes":

  • Do you have the amount of ventilation as needed? For example, 2 bedrooms, a dining room, a bathroom, a kitchen and a family room must have at least 3 vents. Can be mixed or natural models.
  • Is your house odor free?
  • Are each cooking room with a stove, wood stove, or grill with ventilation like a window or exhaust fan?
  • Are there exhaust fans or air gaps in the walls of each bathroom?
  • Does each exhaust fan work well and the air is discharged outside the room? (not to the attic or home garage)

What are the consequences if room ventilation is bad?

Dirty air trapped inside the house can affect your health and your family. According to the WHO World Health Organization, poorly ventilated buildings can be a means of spreading germs that cause disease, such as flu, tuberculosis and legionellosis.

Most of these infectious diseases are transmitted through the air. When someone is sick then coughing or sneezing is not closed, the germs will continue to fly in the air. Well if the ventilation of the room is bad, the air containing the germs of disease will continue to be in the same room so that it is easily inhaled again by other healthy people. Even people who have been sick and have recovered can recur with the same disease if they are still breathing the same air.

Transmission of recurrent disease in the same building is often also called sick building syndrome (SBS). This risk is also not only vulnerable to office buildings or housing. Clinics and hospitals that are not well ventilated are vulnerable to the spread of infection for workers, visitors, and patients who are there. The spread of infection in hospitals is called the hospital infection infection (HAI)

Bad ventilation makes the house easy to mold

Not only that. If there is no exchange of fresh air, the room in the building may be smelly for a long time because it continues to be damp. For example from the smell of food, the smell of garbage, and the smell of animal droppings that mix and continue to rotate in the room.

In addition, the air exchange system also indirectly regulates the humidity level of the air. Home furnishings such as wooden floors, wooden tables, and other wooden furniture are susceptible to absorbing the water vapor left in your home. This excess moisture will continue to gather in the house and trigger the growth of moss and fungi in the room, which can affect your health and your family.

Moldy walls and floors are one of the most common sources of allergens in the home. The symptoms can be runny nose, irritation of the itchy and red eyes, sneezing, and itchy throat.

You may also be prone to headaches or recurrent fever. Moldy home walls are one reason why people get sick often because their spores can weaken the immune system.

Here are some tips for better air circulation at home

  • Use the exhaust fan, or at least there is a gap in the air outside the bathroom to remove moisture and the smell of gas from the house.
  • Make sure your kitchen has an exhaust fan that makes air out. Use a fan or open the window when cooking to remove smoke and odor in the air.
  • Do not use the stove without ventilation. Install carbon monoxide detectors at several locations in your home.
  • Take out the washing machine or clothes dryer outdoors too. Clean ventilation regularly to ensure that dust does not block air flow.
  • If you have a hobby of coloring with watercolors or using some chemicals in your home, add extra ventilation. Open the window and use a portable window fan to draw air out of the room.
  • If the air in the room remains too moist, look for a source of moisture that needs to be controlled. If that still doesn't solve the problem, use a dehumidifier. If you use a dehumidifier, make sure you clean it regularly.
